tomato dal

This is Andhra traditional recipe.Mudda pappu(Plain cooked red gram dal) and tomato dal are famous recipes in andhra .Every one knows these recipes and every week these are  reapted dishes in some houses especially children having houses. On festival day many women like to make tomato dal with the combination of potato fry .This recipe is simple and easy to prepare...

Ingredients

red gram dal 200 grs
tomatoes 4 (200grs)
green chillies 4
onion 1
tamarind  3 flakes
salt to taste
red chilli powder 1 spoon
turmeric 1/4 spoon
oil  1 spoon
ghee 1/2 spoon
mustard seeds 1/4 spoon
cumin seeds 1/4 spoon
garlic cloves 5
dry chillies 2
curry leaves few

Preparation

Wash red gram dal with water  2 times. Then soak it for 30 minutes. When using any dal for making of dals or curries ,first soak them for 30 minutes. If you want to prepare the curry quickly then soak the dals atleast for 15 minutes.Soaking dal gives easy digestion and prevents any gastric problems.
Wash tomatoes, onions and green chillies in the water .And better to soak for 15 minutes in salt water.Crystal salt can kills bacterial ,festicide which are sprayed on the vegetables before sending to the market.
After washing the tomatoes cut  them into small pieces. When you are cutting the tomatoes remember one thing that is do not use tip of the tomato because many vegetables store little bit of poison on tip to protect from others(insects). So remove the tip of the tomato and cut into small pieces or 5 to 8 pieces.
cut the onion and green chillies into small pieces.
remove upper layer of garlic cloves.

Method

Thers is two types of methods to prepare tomato dal.

Method 1

 Take a pressure cooker.Add soaked dal,tomato pieces,onion,green chilli pieces,turmeric,red chilli powder,tamarind and 2 cups of water .cook until 3 to 4 whistles.
Open the cooker lid when pressure is completely gone out.
Add salt to taste and mash the  tomato dal.
Finally add seasonings and mix all well.
This is very simple way .But tomato dal  may be become very paste and looks like very sticky because  putting all ingredients in pressure cooker.

Method 2

This process can take 30 to 40 minutes. But taste is  different.
1.Take a pressure cooker. Add  soaked red gram dal  and 2 cups of water.cook for 2 whistles.
2.Take a  vessel. Add tomato pieces, onion and green chilie  pieces, tamarind, red chilli powder, turmeric, salt and 2 cups of water .Cook for 20 minutes.
3.Open the pressure cooker after pressure completely comes out .
4.Mash the dal .
5.add this dal in tomoto pieces and mix all well .
6.And cook for another 15 minutes.
7.Add water and salt if needed.
8.Put off the flame when tomato pieces and dal mix well.
9.Put a pan in low flame.Add oil.
10.After heating the oil add ghee.
11.when ghee is melted add mustard seeds.
12.when mustard seeds are started to crackle add garlic cloves.
13.fry garlic cloves until they turn into brown shade.
14.Then add dry chillies and cumin seeds.fry for 20 seconds.
15.add asafoetida and curry leaves and put off the flame.
16.Add this seasonings to tomato dal and mix well.
Tasty tomato dal is ready.....

Keep in the  mind

Use semi riped tomatoes.Riped tomatoes have some sweet taste. It is good to use in making of rasams and sambars. But in tomato dal use semi riped tomatoes that have sweet and sour taste. That is gives better taste to the dal.
When frying the garlic cloves we should take care because garlic clove has some crackle nature if we not remove upper layer or not  crush the garlic cloves properly.
Do not add salt  first in pressure cooker if you follow method 1.Salt has the nature to stop to cook dal smoothly. So add salt after dal completely cooked.
